For our third installment of screen shots I want to share what I consider the most requested feature of iBank Mobile, the screens to create a transaction.

When we thought about the types of situations in which people would be entering transactions, we knew it would be on the go and in the middle of doing something else. People deal with money in a wide variety of situations, checking out at the grocery store, getting money at the ATM, filling up at the pump, or getting out of a cab. We wanted our transaction entry to be quick, easy and be usable in a wide range of settings. After many attempts, we seem to have something that works very well.

Let’s start at the home screen (although you can enter transactions from other parts of the app):

Home Screen

Home Screen

When you click the plus button, the new transaction editor slides up. The first thing you do is select an account for the transaction. This is done from a simple pick list.

Account Selection

Account Selection

Once you tap on an account the amount editor sides into view. On this screen you enter the amount of the transaction and select the transaction type.

Amount Entry Screen

When you are finished entering the amount, you tap “done.” This takes you to the transaction overview screen. The payee field is preselected and the keyboard comes up. As you type the payee a pick list appears showing a filtered list of payees, at any point you can select a payee from the list and it will auto-complete the payee field. This works similarly to Safari’s address field on the iPhone if you want to try it out.

Payee Selection List

From the entered payee we default the category for the transaction and in most cases you are done. You can enter other information, such as a memo, or splits, if you need to.

In a normal situation I can enter a transaction in about 8 seconds – usually less time than it takes for me to get the receipt after swiping my credit card. It’s smooth, fast and easy to use.

Thanks,
James

  • Good work James!

The more I’m seeing the more I’m looking forward to getting my hands on this.

BTW, if you need any beta testers, give us a shout. I’ve got an iPhone Dev account and happy to run betas if it helps any.

  • I’m eagerly awaiting this pup… Why not get it in the store for those of us wanting to use it – charge for it, get the necessary feedback and then make updates free like various other apps do. It appears that this baby is getting close – folks like me using Ibank are going to buy it, so why not allow us to help test it for the fee and then allow upgrades.

I agree, the most requested feature is the app itself!

  • Oh my. I’m loving where this is going. Keep up the great work! It’s fantastic to read about the people behind this app taking a step back and really thinking things through. Excellent.

  • This looks awesome. This has been the one app I have been looking for since I got my iPhone and have not been able to find. I must agree with Ryan, looks like it’s ready to release as a bata at least through the apple store. We know there are more teaks to come. But man if it works at all I would have started using it last week 🙂

  • Yes how about syncing…. Please tell me it’s NOT going to be like cha-chings version…. I want something that is suited for every day user and then I want one that is geared towards mobile me users! or something where I dont have to have my phone on me to sync!

    Thanks

  • I can’t wait for it. iBank is from far the best personal finance manager I’ve ever known. I even use it for my company stuff. But I should confess: waiting about an year to see the real iPhone app is killing me…

I think you guys didn’t believed in the appstore in the beginning, because you started the dev of the software too late… Please, hurry up, became one of miners in this gold rush… Before it is too late and your old clients gets used with another app –> even in the desktop

  • They can have mobile me just offer an option for people with mobile me and an option for people without… I don’t care what they do just as long as the syncing is seamless and I don’t have to have my phone on me at all times.

For example Cha-ching you have to open the app on the computer and the phone and then go and manually tap sync ..

  • I think mobileme should stay for those who want it – with an option for some kind of alternative for non-mobileme’ers. The most important thing from my perspective is being able to use multiple iPhones to sync to mobileme (as is currently available). This way my wife can add her transactions, I can add mine and they all sync back to the desktop iBank – it totally rocks.

  • I agree that it would be neat to be able to periodically send your data to mobleme so that if you’re gone on long trips, you don’t have a huge sync when you return home. I can be gone for months at a time. That would be a neat feature. Not a deal-breaker, just another luxury item that would be handy. However, it shouldn’t turn the app into anything like the web-based app that was painfully slow and required an online log-in for normal entries. That was bad, and we had to give it up. Just an option to periodically log in and send data would be nice.

  • I just found out about this via a post in the iBank support forum. This will so much better than the “solution” currently in place. Believe it or not, there are areas that aren’t blanketed with WiFi. Being able to enter transactions offline will be great.

    A couple of requests:
    1) Please make sure the app is compatible with the iPod Touch.
    2) It would be really nice to have a setup option to hide account balances on the main screen. I’d just as soon keep that information private from the person snooping over my shoulder.
    3) MobileMe or not. Either way is fine by me as long as the sync is bullet-proof, accurate, and gracefully recovers from a failure. If it isn’t all three of these, than it is potentially more trouble than it is worth.

  • They do have an option for us (mobile me) but currently it does not work to well! its more of a pain…. but all i care about is seamless syncing!

  • Pleeeeaaassseee include the ability for photo-receipts for various transactions 🙂 Otherwise, this app looks amazing!!! Can’t wait!

  • WHEN!!?!?!?!?!?!?! Screen shots are great teasers but to no answer or clue as to when it may be released is getting really freaking annoying.

  • The good news: Wow, looks really great, can’t wait for it!
The bad news: No seriously, can’t wait for it. WHEN??????

  • I guess when they said “Arriving in the FIRST QUARTER of THIS YEAR.”* they didn’t realize that a quarter is 3-months. We are about to be in the 5th month of this year and still no product.

I also love how they have stopped giving us updates. Come on guys, you’re better than this!

*In case you are wondering where they said the above quote, check out the original press release. Not that it matters, I just like to back my self up with sources.

  • Checking daily for updates. Just checked out Quicken Online for the first time. I’m running Quicken 2002 on my Mac and am looking for a new solution. I’m on an older Mac laptop and will be upgrading soon to PowerBook Pro and would like to transition to iBank at the same time. Will continue to check…
