We never really stop here at IGG. Even before iBank for iPhone 2.0 was released, we knew what features would be coming in the next release and some were already being developed. Today, I want to give a brief update on what the next release of iBank for iPhone will bring:

Search

This is probably the number one requested feature since release. We originally wanted to ship the first version with search, but once iOS 8 came out we new we had to make some hard choices. Obviously, we chose to get a solid initial release out shortly after iOS 8 with the plan to add “missing” features shortly after shipping. I can also tell you a little about how it will work. If you search from the overview screen, you’ll get your results separated out by account. If you drill down into an account and search, we will only search the current account.

Default Account

We are adding a “default account” option. If there is a default account selected, then pressing the + button will skip the account picker screen and let you go right in to editing the amount and payee. If you need to change which account the transaction is occurring in, you’ll always be able to do that from the transaction details screen.

Last Opened Document

When a user leaves the iBank for iPhone app and opens a different app, the OS may quit our app. Currently if that happens, when you go back to iBank you’ll have to re-open the financial book you were previously in. We are going to fix that for the next release so that if you go back to the app, we put you back in the last open financial book.

Pull to Refresh

Last, but certainly not least: We are introducing the increasingly common gesture, pull to refresh. In our app this will kick off the refresh sequence: sync, download Direct Access, download security quotes, get currency exchange rates. This will be particularly helpful for users that sync via WebDAV so they can quickly start a sync after they add a transaction.

We are working very hard to get this out to you soon! I’d love to get it in your hands by the end of the month, but please realize that is a goal, not a promise.

-Ian

  • Ian, how about including an account total? It would help anyone who has several accounts and uses an overall total to track their net worth. Ideally, a summary by account type – demand deposits, credit cards, investments, etc. – would also be included.

  • Please remove the sync bug, Try this: delete a transaction one in iphone another in the mac, sync it… See the result (does not delete), now. try to resent with the option “resync all” see how the transactions get duplicated in every single account …

  • The default account is very handy, and I do miss it from the previous version. I would like to see the sync become more reliable, and I would like to see the transaction types match iBank (ATM, Charge, Online, POS, Check, Deposit, Transfer, Withdrawal).

    Thanks for soliciting feedback!

    • I agree profusely about matching transaction types! Without this the app has become just a viewer only!

If you add an entry you have to double your work by syncing, Goto your Mac, sync again, update all withdrawal transaction types, then sync again, then sync in iPhone app.

So tell me this seems very counter productive and makes the iPhone app more of a burden!

  • I agree with Dan. I think you should fix the input window and add back in the transaction types, instead of making it a change on the second screen. Keep the old workflow! And fix the payee bug. I have thousands of transactions and only a handful of my payees are showing up when I type them in. Very frustrating.

  • At present this app is well below par, all you’ve done is strip a load of features out of the original version! The most obvious, basic & surprising feature you haven’t mentioned is totals. I’ve got 20-30 seperate accounts, there is no point in this app unless I can see totals across these.

Secondly at least basic reports need to be possible, like just a chart of net worth or an account balance.

  • I think one of the most requested features for IBank for iPhone is still noticeably absent… Any progress on snapping pictures of a receipt (or invoice) and attaching it to a transaction? Thank you.

  • Concur with the observations :- 1) Missing Totals per Group 2) Transaction Types not matching Ibank desktop’s set 3) Payee search not giving full results

Would like to be able to go back and forth with Budgets , not just current month.

Concur with Tom that some basic reporting should be included, net worth , spend by category etc.

  • I like the app overall, but please add the ability to update the security/bond prices manually and sync. its a chore to do it in ibank mac.

  • What I like

    – app try to syncing to Mac automatically
    – Spending Page

    What I wish

    – when app try to syncing to Mac every time I leave Spending Page, I’m annoying the black notification. Could it be only small icon on the top bar?
    – Spending Page, Compare to the previous version that show only active categories in current and previous month it’s make sense more than show every categories in every month. Think about some payment that we pay annually, transaction would be a few time in a year but we have to see it all the time like this version.
    – Chart could be must have feature but it’s not.
    – The Done button when I finish add transaction is on the top right of screen and it far from keyboard, even I use iPhone 5s it still difficult to press.

    What I dislike

    – UI design, I accidentally go back to iBank first page to see list of Financial Book that I think I don’t want to see it much and rarely to use it, but it appear all the time on the main back navigate ( top left ) and also swipe back too.
    – And also every time I close the app and open it again the first page is Financial Book page instead of the main page I can add transaction instantly. iBank Mobile 1.0 do this better.
    – Main navigation in the bottom bar, Manage Categories and others is it should be in the main navigation bar? and the add transaction button look strange that some part of button is drop from the screen. I know you try to make it big because this the most use button but is it the best design choice? and the position of it. Compare to iBank Mobile, again It’s better design.
    – I still curious what’s different between Financial Book and Holding, why it have many type of group of account?

Totally I quite disappoint for waiting this update for a longggg time I download iBank Mobile since at first launch (5 years ago?) and it’s not have any feature or visual update. So I expect to this version could do better in UI UX design, feature and workflow but I think the previous old age version do it much better.

  • I lake the app. After a rocky start which was my fault ( Sorry IGG) it updates itself. I also like the fact that development is ongoing and improvements are in the pipeline. Just one question..Any news on iBank 5.2 for make release date?

  • I’ve been an avid user for many years. Sadly the iBank Mobile 2.0 has made me to look other alternatives for mobile personal finance tracking.
I really don’t get the fact why you’d update the app and REMOVE all the key features we’ve already used to? Everything is much more complicated and the lack of key features just too much to handle for me. I fully agree with the above users about the features that have just been cut off…

    A very disappointed customer 🙁

  • Surprised there wasn’t a bigger announcement… this blog post was the first I heard that the new release was out.

I haven’t bought v2 yet, might hold off based on the comments above (default account and start-on-main-page are critical for me), but v1 just started exhibiting a nasty bug on iOS 8 where the transaction details screen is blank until I hit edit. That’s an awful coincidence.

  • Andrew, from the “support articles” page:
    – Does iBank Mobile work with iOS 8?
iBank Mobile is not compatible with iOS 8.
There are several bugs which occur with iBank Mobile on iOS 8.
We have officially discontinued iBank Mobile.
iBank for iPhone, which is compatible with iOS 8, is now available from the App Store.

  • Pretty sure iOS 8 came out before the new v2 app. That’s more than a little disappointing, particularly given the missing features.

The description also indicates v2 requires iBank for Mac 5; I’m still on 4.7.5. I didn’t want to upgrade when it was released, and for various reasons I haven’t had a chance to do so since. This is becoming both expensive and time consuming.

  • After waiting a long time to get an available credit field for credit cards on the overview page of iBank for iPad, I was disappointed to see it omitted in iBank Mobile 2.0, even though their is a field for credit limit in account setup.

  • My biggest gripe with the new UI is the sequence involved in entering a transaction. In the old app, it was straightforward: an “Enter Amount” screen with the number pad, then “Enter Payee” with the keyboard, then the full transaction for review. Tapping the amount or payee took you back to the entry screen for that field.

Now you enter the payee on the “Enter Amount” screen. Huh?? Worse still, the auto-complete for payee only works on this screen, and you can’t get back to this screen from the full transaction. Instead, once the full transaction is displayed, all updates are done in place, without leaving the transaction view. That is unintuitive, inconsistent, and smacks of changing something just to change it.

At the very least, PLEASE get auto-complete working when you change the payee, however you do it. It’s infuriating when I enter the wrong payee (or forget to enter one altogether, because the screen says “Enter Amount”, not payee) and then have to type the whole thing in on the transaction screen.

  • I am impressed by iBank for iPhone 2.0. It is complete and very fast. The one thing I would like to see is user control over when the app seeks to sync with the Mac and update security prices.

  • I use iBank on my iPhone to enter in transactions on the fly, quickly check account balances and check previous transactions.
I like the new app but when I compare the UI to the previous version I find myself wanting for the old version again.

    Key reason:
    – Old iPhone workflow is much quicker and easier for adding new transactions.
This is helped by default accounts, ability to identify Primary accounts, no need to select financial book when I open the app (i only have one book so this extra step is a waste of time).

    – On the home page I can see the A/C balance of my main accounts that I use each day, I don’t have to scroll through all my accounts to find the individual accounts that mater to me on a daily basis.

    – I can search for transactions in an account or across all accounts. I find this very handy when I want to quickly check when/if I paid someone or what I paid for something.

I know some of these are planned to be addressed in the next release but I thought I would highlight all the key points.

    On the new features front:
    1. Account groups in iBank on the Mac carried over to the iPhone app
    2. See a Total Value for my Security Portfolio when on the security Portfolio tab.
    3. Option that removes the need to select a Financial Book at the start if I only have one financial book. By the way that also applies for the iPad version..

Really appreciate you soliciting feedback. Keep up the great work.

  • I am generally happy with iBank for mac and pleased that the iPhone app was updated. Visibly missing though is the ability to sync with the cloud. Syncing via wifi is cumbersome and outdated…

  • Thank you for the 2.0 update. This was a huge undertaking and a big improvement. One thing that would be greatly helpful for me is support for envelope balances when viewing my spending for the month. Since I have many categories that carry over their cash from month-to-month, showing only the budgeted amount doesn’t help me much. I’m more concerned about using all the cash in my envelope than exceeding a monthly budget (of course, both are valuable). Might this be on the roadmap for a future release?

  • WHAT I”M LOOKING FOR!

    Seamless integration with Apple Pay.
When I make an Apple Pay transaction… it’s automatically (or by prompt) added to iBank for iPhone 2.0.

ICG Software could be the first to add this!!

Get to work. It will be awesome. 🙂

  • Like Dan who said on 9th October, I too would like to see transaction types in-line with iBank (ATM, Charge, Online, POS, Check, Deposit, Transfer, Withdrawal).

It’s tedious having to correct them through iBank on the Mac after sync, and then having to sync back to iPhone.

Had hoped this would make an appearance in v2.1, but unfortunately not.

  • I’m concerned that the features in iBank Mobile are so lacking in substance as to render work done “on the road” which forces items to be edited in the Mac database. shouldn’t they mirror ewach other. Also can we get iBank Mobile to either landscape or a large font style for older folks…it is only with some difficulty that I can read the text in certain lighting situations
